Thomas Tuchel wanted to close the gaps during England vs Argentina

In a rollercoaster of a match, England were desperately close to booking a place in the final of the biggest tournament in all of sport. Showcasing skill in abundance, Anthony Gordon produced a magnificent finish to put ‘The Three Lions’ into the lead.

Following the goal, Thomas Tuchel made very defensive changes, opting to try to see the game out rather than going for a second. And while he would’ve been praised had it worked, it ultimately didn’t. The South American side found an equaliser in the 85th minute, before Lionel Messi produced a magnificent assist to bag the win for Argentina.

Consequently, Tuchel has had to face backlash from pundits. However, despite the comments made about his call, the boss had a method to his madness, even if it didn’t pan out the way he’d have liked.

In his post-match interview with the BBC, the German explained: “We decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open; they won every header and kept crossing and crossing, so we went to a back five to close the gaps inside and be strong in the air, because straight after our goal, with no substitutions, we just conceded too many crosses and chances. Of course, the responsibility is on the coach.”
