Jude Bellingham scores twice in the first half against Mexico

Of all the venues in football, Mexico’s national stadium is one of the most intimidating. With 87,523 fans and an altitude of 7220 feet above sea level, the ground would be a horrifying place to visit even without the host’s incredible record. Going into tonight, Mexico had only lost to two teams at the Azteca.

However, after Thomas Tuchel’s side upped the gears, the reputation of the venue looked to be nothing other than a myth. In the 36th minute, Bukayo Saka crossed the ball into the box, giving Jude Bellingham the chance, which he gladly took, to head it home.

Then, just 98 seconds later, the icon doubled England’s lead. This time, Harry Kane delivered the pass, which his teammate latched onto to put his team firmly into the ascendancy.

At this point, Mexico couldn’t believe what had transpired. Their incredible record looked to be going up in smoke. However, if England thought it was going to be an easy night’s work, then they were very much mistaken.

In the 42nd minute, Julián Quiñones pulled one back, prompting an electrifying end to the opening 45 minutes, in which Jordan Pickford had to produce heroics to keep ‘The Three Lions’ in the match.
