Why Kylian Mbappe doesn’t deserve to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot over Lionel Messi

Kylian Mbappe is currently leading the race to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot, ahead of Lionel Messi.

But does the Frenchman deserve to pip the Argentine to the post?

Kylian Mbappe scored two goals in a third-place play-off

Throughout the competition, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi have looked nothing short of sensational, with both of the football legends putting on spectacular performances.

Going into the semi-finals, had the pair, who were both level on eight goals apiece, progressed to the final together, then they would’ve had an incredible showdown for the Golden Boot this evening at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA.

WOW: Pele was better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, according to a football legend

Alas, while Argentina produced an epic comeback against England to earn the opportunity to play on the grandest stage of them all, France fell short against Spain in an underwhelming display.

Because of this, Mbappe played in a third-place play-off against England, where he scored twice in a dramatic 6-4 clash against ‘The Three Lions’. Therefore, despite losing his semi-final, the Frenchman is now currently ahead of Messi when it comes to goals, despite his two extra finishes coming in a game that pales in comparison to what’s transpiring between Argentina and Spain.

With that in mind, it would be a travesty if Messi were to miss out on claiming this accolade.
