Why Spain defeating France at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is a surprisingly bad result for England

Spain dumping France out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 might not be as good a result for England as first thought.

In a massive shock, the Iberian side picked up a 2-0 victory at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA.

France wasn’t as good as England fans thought

Going into the semi-final clash, France had the world petrified. However, under the weight of a fellow world-class side, they completely fell apart. After Lucas Digne kicked Lamine Yamal, to give Mikel Oyarzabal an opportunity to score from the spot, which he took and then some, Didier Deschamps‘ team never looked much of a threat.

While this should’ve inspired the favourites, if anything, Spain appeared the more dangerous, with Pedro Porro eventually doubling his side’s lead.

Now, the underdogs go to the biggest match in all of sport, while France will have to battle it out in a third-place play-off. Unsurprisingly, many English fans are over the moon that they won’t have to play the 2018 champions if they get to the final. But is this actually the best-case scenario?

Throughout the competition, France has coasted, with no team able to particularly push them very hard; even Norway didn’t have the mighty Erling Haaland in the starting XI. Therefore, while the fear of France was most definitely there, Spain showed that there was perhaps nothing to be scared of.

However, it’s pretty clear that there’s very much something to be worried about when it comes to the 2024 European Champions.

But before ‘The Three Lions’ can zone in on a clash with Spain, they must first overcome Argentina, who won’t go down without a fight.
