Arsenal support Mikel Arteta amid controversial decision

While Arsenal came away from the North East with three points, the match wasn’t without controversy.

Sunderland were awarded a penalty, which David Raya heroically saved. However, the London team does not believe that the decision to give the spot-kick against them following a tussle between Ezri Konsa and Dan Ballard, which stood despite VAR intervention, should ever have ever happened in the first place.

Following the fixture, Mikel Arteta, described the incident as ‘unacceptable’.

In his post-match interview with TNT Sports, he raged: “I’m so upset, it is unacceptable at this level, unacceptable. It can change the course of the season.

“I’ve seen it ten times to make sure and I said ‘it is not possible it is penalty’. It is a judo roll. That’s what it is.

“This cannot happen. In my view. I have been involved in football for 27/28 years. It’s not a penalty in any game, in any game, in any context in any league.”

In complete agreement with the manager’s concerns, Arsenal have started discussions with Howard Webb, who serves as the head of the officiating body Pro Ref.
