Bruno Fernandes’s Manchester United future in doubt after contract talks stall

Manchester United captain has turned down a new contract at Old Trafford, in a dramatic turn of events, according to reports.

The Portugal international has been a mainstay at United for over six years, having signed for the club during the January 2020 transfer window.

The attacking midfielder is entering the last year of his contract with the Premier League club, having helped guide them to a top four finish last term.

While United have maintained a firm stance on the player, stating categorically that he is not for sale, the midfielder could be looking to force a move after rejecting a contract renewal, according to Sacha Tavolieri.

Tavolieri has claimed that Fernandes turned down a new contract worth £500,000 per week, with the player set to become a free agent next summer.

The 31-year-old was pivotal under Michael Carrick, having broken the record for Premier League assists in a single season, registering a staggering 21 in 35 league appearances.

After chalking up 30 goal contributions in the top flight last season, Fernandes has reportedly been lined up by several clubs, including current Turkish champions Galatasaray.

United begin search for potential replacement

While United work on striking a deal with their star man, the Red Devils have been looking elsewhere for potential replacements, according to reports.

Roma midfielder and France international, Manu Kone, as well as Fulham’s Sander Berge, have both been touted as players who fit the profile of the club, as United seek to strengthen their midfield.

United have already acquired the services of Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Karl Darlow in the transfer market this summer, but with 2026/27 promising a busier schedule for Carrick’s side, there will likely be several more incomings.

Fernandes will likely appear alongside his new teammates competitively for the first time when they make the trip to newly promoted Hull City on the opening weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
