Didier Deschamps will miss France vs Norway

Didier Deschamps understandably made the decision to head home, with his squad rallying around to support his decision.

The FFF confirmed in a statement: “Didier Deschamps will not be able to oversee training sessions ahead of the Norway v France match. He will also be absent from the bench for Friday’s final Group I game.”

The federation added: “The national team coach learned this morning of the death of his mother and will return to France to attend her funeral.”

In a decision made in agreement with FFF president Philippe Diallo, assistant coach Guy Stephen will take on the reins until Deschamps returns.

Having defeated Senegal and Iraq, France have already secured a place in the Round of 32. However, they still have work to do to bag the top spot as Norway have also emerged victorious in both of their opening games, with Erling Haaland finding the back of the net on four occasions.

Having managed France since 2012, Deschamps is set to walk away from the role at the end of the year. During this time, he has scaled the managerial mountain, guiding France to a World Cup victory in 2018.
