Bogdan Stoica battled through an elbow injury to defeat Todd Hutchings

In front of a packed crowd in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, Bogdan Stoica put on the display of a lifetime to defeat the legendary Todd Hutchings. However, during the match, he had to overcome serious adversity in the form of an elbow injury.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, the Romanian explained: “I’m a huge fan of Todd. It feels unreal. I did have plan A, B, C, D, but I also had crazy fear because I’ve had a cold for a week-and-a-half. I was talking to God earlier, and I said, ‘If I’m meant to lose and you’ve sent me this cold, I understand. If you send me this cold and I win, I will also understand’. I had some deep conversations before the match. Everything worked out.

“The power felt on point; the problem was the endurance. I knew if I got into a long match, I would gas out more than him. Usually, I have good endurance, but not today. As soon as he caught me in the first round, my elbow cracked again. I felt it, so I thought, ‘I can’t do that again, because it’s going to snap’. I tried something else; no pain in the elbow. I have a lot of side pressure, and I don’t think Todd realised that I have a lot of that because it’s my main weapon.

“Every time he was getting the shoulder in, I was also getting the shoulder in and moving him off centre. So, the elbow held up fine. In round two, he put me in a bad position. I felt the elbow again, and I thought, ‘If I’m contesting this one, I’m in trouble’. So, I let it go. I always tell people to win the war, don’t focus on one round, focus on the long game. I let that one go because I knew I had time to play with.”

Bogdan Stoica says Neil Pickup is his ‘Armwrestling dad’

Upon setting foot on the stage, Stoica exchanged a few words with former middleweight champion Neil Pickup, who’s played a massive role in making him the competitor he is today.

When asked about the interaction, the sportsman replied: “I have a very special relationship with him. I call Neil my ‘Armwrestling dad’. I love my dad with all my heart, but he’s not big into arm wrestling’. Lately, he came around from watching my stuff. For the last ten years, Neil has always been there to support and trust me. I have a lot of respect and love for him. The moment means so much more when he’s there.”
