Manchester United fans couldn’t believe their eyes as Nobel Mendy scored the second goal for Hull.
After such a good finish to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, Michael Carrick expected big things from his side today. Alas, the opening 45 minutes of the season couldn’t have gone much worse.
Nobel Mendy scores for Hull against Manchester United
Having been promoted via the Championship play-offs, Hull weren’t expected to offer much of a challenge to Manchester United. However, they’ve forced a lot of people to eat humble pie, with the underdogs producing a tremendous first-half display.
From the very first whistle, it was clear as day that Hull meant business, with the Yorkshire club attacking the Premier League giants with everything they had. And eventually, they made the breakthrough.
In the 17th minute, Senne Lammens made an excellent save to deny Oli McBurnie. However, despite the Belgian’s best efforts, he couldn’t prevent the ball from landing at the feet of Semi Ajayi, who smashed it with maximum velocity to send it hurtling into the back of the net.
At this point, United really needed to switch on. But in reality, the goal had more of an impact on Hull, with the team chasing another, which they found in the 38th minute.
Showcasing his class, Nobel Mendy got his head on the end of a free kick to double his club’s lead.
Now, United is really up against it.
Is Marcus Rashford playing for Manchester United against Hull?
With United 2-0 down, they desperately need a goal.
However, with Marcus Rashford not starting the match, they’ve struggled to find one.
But at the start of the second half, Carrick made the decision to bring him on as a substitute.
After such controversy regarding his return, if Rashford could get United back into the game, then it would do wonders for his relationship with the fans.
