Breel Embolo receives red card against Argentina

Going into the fixture between Argentina and Switzerland, there’s no doubt that the reigning world champions were the favourites. And they proved exactly why when Alexis Mac Allister hit the back of the net after just ten minutes.

However, in a testament to the self-belief of the Swiss players, they never gave up, eventually getting their reward in the 67th minute in the form of a Dan Ndoye goal.

The surprising moment gave the underdogs a massive boost. Alas, their celebrations didn’t last long, as they were quickly reduced to ten men. The mistaken identity VAR rule, which gives referees the power to overturn a yellow or red card even if play has restarted, was utilised against Breel Embolo.

A yellow card was originally given to Argentina’s Leandro Paredes for a foul. However, once reviewed, a second yellow was given to the Rennes star for simulation.

After his dismissal, the forward desperately complained to the official, to no avail. Subsequently, Embolo burst into tears, with his teammates having the tough job of consoling him.
