Switzerland eliminate Colombia at FIFA World Cup 2026

After 120 minutes couldn’t separate them, Colombia and Switzerland had no choice but to take on the most nerve-wracking challenge in all of sport — a penalty shootout.

Juan Fernando Quintero smashed the ball hard and fast, getting Colombia up and running. In response, Granit Xhaka just about got his spotkick past Camilo Vargas, who got a hand to it.

Next up, Davinson Sánchez took a stuttered run-up before sending his effort flying into the bar. Showing his opponent exactly how it’s done, Zeki Amdouni also opted for a stuttered run-up, but unlike his counterpart, he slotted it into the bottom right corner.

WOW: Why Argentina defeating Egypt at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is terrible news for England

In a moment that left fans on edge, Jaminton Campaz just about squeezed the ball under Gregor Kobel. And that piled the pressure on Manuel Akanji, who sent his attempt soaring over the bar.

Alas, Cucho Hernández couldn’t take advantage, with Kobel making his first save. Showcasing nerves of steel, Cedric Itten put it straight down the middle.

With the weight of the world on his shoulders, Luis Díaz showcased remarkable composure to send the goalkeeper the wrong way. But it didn’t matter as Rubén Vargas earned hero status in his homeland by scoring from the spot to secure Switzerland a quarter-final showdown with Argentina.
