Argentina have just defeated Egypt at the FIFA World Cup 2026, and it couldn’t be a worse result for England.
The South American team pulled off a remarkable comeback, battling from behind to win 3-2 at the Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
England will likely have to play Argentina at the FIFA World Cup 2026
Argentina entered the match against Egypt tonight as monumental favourites. However, it certainly didn’t look that way at the start, with the African side taking the lead in the 15th minute courtesy of a Yasser Ibrahim header.
Moments later, it appeared like the reigning world champions had found a way back into the contest in the form of a spotkick. However, in a shocking moment, Messi missed yet another penalty.
At this stage, there was a lot of time for Argentina to recover. However, it was the Egyptians who continued to pile on the pressure, scoring a brilliant goal which was eventually ruled out by VAR.

While this should’ve kicked the South American side into gear, it didn’t, with the door opening for Mostafa Ziko to double his country’s lead.
Realising that their place in the tournament was close to evaporating away, the 3x champions burst into life, with Cristian Romero hitting the back of the net, before Lionel Messi redeemed himself with an excellent finish.
Then, in stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez found the winner, rendering Egyptian fans heartbroken.
Had they not managed to come from behind, then assuming England defeats Norway, the European nation would’ve had a path to the final that definitely wouldn’t have involved Argentina. But now, in all likelihood, ‘The Three Lions’ will have to overcome the ferocious side themselves.
