Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez score late for Argentina

Argentina left it late yet again on the grandest stage of them all. After nailbiting games against Cape Verde and Egypt, their fans hoped for an easier match, but the Swiss weren’t going to lie down.

The fixture started exactly how the South American team would’ve wanted, with Alexis Mac Allister heading the ball home after ten minutes.

However, showcasing resilience in abundance, the underdogs fought back, with Dan Ndoye getting his side back into the game with a brilliant finish in the 67th minute. Alas, the celebrations were short-lived, as Switzerland had a player sent off in a case of mistaken identity.

Regardless, they continued to fight hard, dragging the favourites into extra time. But in the end, Argentina proved too much. In a moment of magic, from outside the box, Julian Alvarez smashed the ball with remarkable power and precision, sending it hurtling into the top corner.

Then, in the dying moments of the match, Lautaro Martínez, pounced on a save to put the result beyond doubt and secure his country a place in the semi-finals.
