Which Argentina players could be banned after World Cup brawl with Spain?

Argentina players face bans after a fight broke out following the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final.

On Sunday evening, Spain emerged victorious 1-0 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA, in what was, compared to the rest of the tournament, a relatively dull affair. But there was plenty of action once the final whistle blew.

Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina face bans for Argentina

FIFA has opened an investigation into exactly what happened following Spain vs Argentina, with members of the losing side facing bans.

In a moment of madness, Nahuel Molina appeared to strike Rodri in the stomach after the Spanish captain sprinted onto the pitch in celebration.

That wasn’t the only moment that caught the world’s attention, with a brawl breaking out in the centre of the field. Leandro Paredes seemingly grabbed Eric Garcia by the throat before launching Gavi towards the ground.

Due to his conduct, Paredes was shown a red card by the referee Slavko Vincic, who certainly had a game to remember. He gave Enzo Fernandez his marching orders right before the match went to extra time. The official also booked a further three Argentine players, and even manager, Lionel Scaloni.

In a statement, FIFA said: “Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the Fifa World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code (FDC), the Fifa Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents.”

Furthermore, the governing body is also investigating Argentina’s conduct following their victory in the semi-final of the competition against England.

The South American side celebrated with a banner proclaiming ‘Las Malvinas son Argentinas’, which was sneaked into the venue by fans. FIFA strictly prohibits players or teams from making political statements. Therefore, the footballers involved could also be banned.
