However, as brilliant as the genius is, he’s 39 years of age. His remarkable football IQ has allowed him to remain at the top of his game, with the Argentine constantly adapting. While he can’t run in the way he used to, the superstar will now make the best out of every single moment the ball arrives at his feet.

However, as the old adage goes, ‘Father Time catches up with everyone’.

By the time the next World Cup rolls around, Messi will be 43, making an appearance at the competition relatively unlikely.

Following the game against Spain, the magician was left in tears, perhaps knowing that this was his last dance.

Lionel Messi hinted at international retirement in emotional Instagram post

While Messi will continue to play for Inter Miami for the foreseeable future, it looks like his time in the Argentina jersey could be coming to an end.

Prior to the final against Spain, he may have hinted at international retirement.

In an Instagram post, the South American wrote: “The best thing about all these years has never been just the titles, but the whole journey. Sharing every day with this group, competing together, getting back up in difficult moments, and enjoying every step.

“Thanks to each of my teammates, the technical staff and all the people who work every day to keep this National Team a family.

“Whatever happens, this group has already written a story that we will never forget and that no one can erase.”
